Pumpkin Update Week of 6.15

Shade cloth over the pumpkin patch.

Female on the 1,000 pound plant

Pumpkin chronicles-
We have several females on the 1,000 pounders in the main garden. We have to "terminate" a few as the plant can only feed one pumpkin at a time. This will be a difficult day for us. Please do not bring politics or your personal beliefs into this. It's already hard enough having to choose who stays and who goes.

The rain and somewhat milder temperatures have been good for pumpkins, well some of the rain has been good. The torrential downpours have been STRESSFUL.

On Father's Day he wanted to spend some extra time getting a jump on things before this week's heat made everything explode. As he stood in front of his patch, gazing up into the sky and shielding his eyes from the sun he said "These 90 degree temperatures worry me. That and the damned humidity".

The best offense is a good defense, so Jonathan, a man who has worked outside for 40 years and has never used sunblock, set up a hoop house type contraption for the front yard and put a shade cloth on to protect the plants from sunburn. Depending on the humidity (and really if the female plants are germinated) we may end up keeping a fan on the pumpkin that is the biggest. A.Fan.In.The.Outside.Garden. This will be the event I come back to and say "Yes, this is when I was in too deep".
