Holland Botanical Newsletter 8.7.25
HELLO and thank you for a fantastic delivery week!
My emails will look a little different moving forward, I had to do the small business version of adulting and get an email service. Gmail was in a *spicy* mood last week and bounced about 25% of my newsletters back. RUDE. Please bear with me as this crusty Gen-Xer learns to navigate another platform.
This week we had tomatoes, cucumbers and corn from South Georgia, zucchini from Osage farms and peaches from King Farms in South Carolina. The peach variety this week is August Lady.
EXTRAS! I have extra peaches if anyone is interested. The cost is $9 for about 3 pounds. Pick up at our house near Walton High School
Sadly I’ve had to move the links we love off of my signature. I’ve posted them on the blog and I’ll include the direct link every week. You can find the links here!
With the cooler temperatures and much needed rain, we feel pretty safe in saying
WE HAVE A GIANT PUMPKIN!
Jon’s added a pool noodle under the stem because that’s a very common place for it to break off. The pool noodle will keep the stem from growing into the ground. We grabbed a few more foam garden pads from the $1.50 tree to keep the rind out of the mud. He’s been drying it off with a towel when the rain stops to discourage rot. (?) But the visual it gives is brushing your teeth while eating Oreos. We’ve been keeping track of the size and it’s been gaining between 15-20% PER DAY! The extended forecast is perfect for growing giant pumpkins. I’ll post a blog before the weekend for those of you not on social media.
Over the weekend I made a spiced peach compote. It’s so good in yogurt/cottage cheese and super easy to make.
You’ll need: 5-6 large peaches, sliced and peeled.
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp vanilla
Ground cinnamon and ginger to taste
Mix honey and peaches in a bowl and let it sit for about an hour.
Add the peach mixture to a saucepan and let it cook down for until the peaches are softer. I used my potato masher to get it moving.
Then add your brown sugar (more if you like!) vanilla and spiced. I love ginger and I wish I added crystalized ginger! Mix frequently until the peaches are the texture you like.
